The Charitable Dick DeVos

When one hears of the name Dick DeVos, there is no doubt that the first thing that comes to mind is his philanthropic and charitable acts. Dick DeVos, a president at The Windquest Group, was born on October 21 in the year 1955. He is a great entrepreneur from the Michigan state of the United States of America. He has also been interested in politics where he vied for the gubernatorial seat of Michigan in 2006, but unfortunately lost to Jennifer Granholm who was the incumbent Democrat. He is the husband to the sitting eleventh Secretary of Education in America, Betsy DeVos. He appears as an all rounded person, a family man, an entrepreneur and a philanthropist.

Dick DeVos’ acts of philanthropy and his interests in giving students and schools the chances to prove that they can be their best to makes him a man of good faith. Although some critics look at it as a way of attracting attention and hiding their financial disclosures, I believe that this disclosure of the amount of money that they disburse to the different areas that they sponsor was a way of creating transparency in their charitable contributions. The DeVos family not only makes contributions to the rich kids’ schools such as the prestigious West Michigan Aviation Academy, but they also disburse funds to support the financially challenged kids from the surrounding counties so they can study robotics and aeronautical engineering. In my opinion, this is a man out there to do good for the society.

I find that Dick is not only interested in education but in the wholesome of the entire community. His contributions to the civic sector, leadership and development as well as the Health services indicates his wholeheartedness to assist and better the lives of the people within and without. He is a grand example of what it means to give back to the society in terms of education and health, which are the major issues that touch on communities.

The fact that Dick DeVos involves his family in his plans on ways to disburse the various contributions shows the respect that he holds for his family members, which I find outstanding. It is this same respect that is reflected in his charitable acts, which are done without strings attached or any expectations. Thus, in my opinion, these acts reflect on a man who is a rare gem to those that get to be touched by his acts of philanthropy directly or indirectly.

Betsy and Dick Devos Are Philanthropy Giants

For many years now, Betsy Devos, wife of Dick Devos, has joined her husband in efforts to help people across America. he became active in the Republican party 30 years ago by joining party organizations, political action committees, and through being chairman of the Michigan Republican Party. She is a reformer at heart just like her husband who ran for Governor of Michigan back in 2006.

Betsy is tireless in her efforts to bring change to communities. She seeks innovative methods of solving social problems. She is currently the chairman of the Windquest Group which is an operating group and multi-company that invests in manufacturing, technology, and clean energy. It is privately held by her family and she founded it back in 1989 with Dick Devos who once owned Amway and the Orlando Magic. Dick and Betsy Devos are humble people, however. They do good work for others through the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation and its charitable reach is expansive. Betsy has given time and money to help the Mars Hill bible Church, the Foundation for Excellence in Education, Kids Hope USA, the Kennedy Center and more.

Betsy was recently interviewed by Philanthropy magazine about the work she is going for others alongside her husband Dick. In the interview, Betsy said many interesting things. She feels optimistic about our current times. There are now 250,000 students in private choice education programs across America and they are publicly funded. They reach 17 states and are expanding due to the success of the model. The growth of this model is making people take notice of how traditional schools are failing children and how something new is needed.

Betsy has been in the movement for radical education reform since the very beginning and now her views have become mainstream. She and Dick have always been interested in education because they have children of their own. They would sometimes visit the homes of low income children and this made them aware of the problems that were preventing them from succeeding in life. Parents were doing everything in their power to help their kids live in a safe environment where they could learn and this inspired Betsy and Dick to do what they could to help. Betsy felt the need to create options for parents who could not afford to send their children to the elite schools that her own children were able to attend. Dick was elected to the State Board of Education for Michigan back in 1990 and it was here that Dick finally had the legislative power to make a difference in the school system. It would not be enough to provide scholarships. Betsy and Dick needed to change the heart of the system itself.

George Soros: A Philanthropist For Democracy

George Soros, the prosperous chairman of Soros Fund Management, founded the Open Society Foundation as his vehicle for making grants to organizations promoting free speech in countries with authoritarian regimes. Soros also favors improving education, reducing poverty and any other programs which indirectly support democratic resistance in countries with repressive governments.

Mr. Soros promotes democratic models on Forbes to the oppressed through his foundation. He understands how people who live in repressive societies feel, since he lived under the Nazi occupation of his native Hungary as a teenager. He’s passionate about freedom for the media and freedom of information, which George Soros views as hallmarks of a democratic society and the means to reduce government corruption. Seeing education as the key to promoting open societies, Soros gives generously to universities, including many in countries that were once part of the former Soviet Union. He’s founded Hungary’s Central European University and generously donated millions to Eastern European universities.

Organizations fighting extreme poverty also see the benefit of Soros’ largess. He’s given almost $75 million to Millennium Promise, a group working toward improving the lives of people living in rural villages in sub-Saharan Africa. George Soros is funded entire villages, with donations helping to improve crop yields and sanitation improvements. Soros has said that he has more than enough money for himself and his family; therefore, he is going to give the remainder away. His philanthropic work makes him feel good and he knows how to achieve long-term benefits for the money that he invests in programs.

Programs on http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/1997/02/the-capitalist-threat/376773/ that receive funding from Soros primarily support democracy-building efforts, with a few exceptions for humanitarian and disaster relief efforts. He’s also involved in U.S. elections, donating to Hillary Clinton’s campaign. The name of the foundation really says it all; George Soros on politico wants to empower citizens to hold their governing body accountable, the hallmark of an open society.
